Aside from its debut season which kicked off in the spring at midseason, Grey’s Anatomy has been a staple in ABC’s fall lineup every season since 2005. Every fall, Grey’s has arrived to bring fans exciting new episodes which continue to rank among ABC’s most-watched programs. For this reason, fans have grown accustomed to knowing the show will take a break during the summer but will always be back after the short hiatus.

Many fans might assume this is again the plan for 2023; however, the sad truth is that Grey’s Anatomy season 20 will not be coming to ABC in 2023.

For the first time since 2004, Grey’s Anatomy will not be a part of ABC’s fall programming slate with the network holding the show’s upcoming 20th season for 2024. This is not by any fault of the show, but rather a direct result of the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike which is preventing many shows from going into production.

Grey’s Anatomy season 20 release updates

Typically, new seasons of Grey’s Anatomy debut sometime in September as part of ABC’s fall lineup where the show has been a staple for the last nearly 20 years. However, due to the ongoing writers’ strike, ABC has opted for a “strike-proof” fall schedule which is leaning entirely into reality programs for original content.

Instead of debuting the new seasons of Station 19 and Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday night in the fall, ABC will instead be turning over its Thursday lineup to game shows with Celebrity Wheel of Fortune, Press Your Luck, and The $100,000 Pyramid airing across the night.

Regardless of when the strike is resolved and the writers are able to resume work after a new deal has been struck with the studios, ABC’s plan seems to be for its scripted series to return in 2024 rather than in the fall.

Given the popularity of a show such as Grey’s, one would think ABC will want to get the show back in its lineup as soon as possible which means there is a chance season 20 will premiere as early as January 2024. However, we’ll have to wait until ABC confirms the plan to know for sure when the next season will premiere.
