Chicago PD’s future is looking much brighter following latest NBC update
By Cody Schultz
Last summer, the future of the One Chicago franchise was thrown into question when word broke that NBC was looking into potentially dropping its 10 p.m. programming block to follow a structure similar to that of The CW and FOX, which only air primetime scripted and reality programs for two hours from 8 – 10 p.m. ET.
The reports left many One Chicago fans wondering whether the move could bring about the end of the One Chicago franchise as we knew it with many fans worrying that cutting the 10 p.m. hour could result in the cancellation of Chicago PD, which has long held down the closing spot on Wednesday night.
Fortunately, NBC opted not to adopt the programming plan for its 2022-23 season, but many Chicago PD fans continued to worry about the show’s future and the possibility of the 10 p.m. programming block being eliminated. Fortunately, it seems NBC is ditching that idea entirely — at least for the time being — which should be music to fans’ ears!
Jeff Bader, President of Entertainment Program Planning Strategy for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, confirmed to TVLine, “As far as we’re concerned, we are laying out schedules for the future that include the 10 o’clock hour.”
This means fans won’t have to worry about Chicago PD being canceled due to a scheduling play.
Is Chicago PD coming back? (Chicago PD renewal updates 2023)
With NBC opting to keep its 10 p.m. programming block around, fans can rest at ease knowing Chicago PD won’t be getting the boot from its longtime perch. Chicago PD has been renewed for season 11 which will air this fall in the closing block of the network’s primetime slate.
While many hoped NBC would hand out a multiseason renewal for the One Chicago shows, it instead opted only to renew the series for one season this time around. With the One Chicago shows renewed, all three series will be coming back for the 2023-24 cycle.

NBC has a track record of valuing its franchises as evident with the long-running success of its Law & Order franchise. While the flagship show did end, it’s since been brought into the fold where it airs alongside television’s longest-running primetime scripted drama Law & Order: SVU which will be heading into its 25th season this fall.
Given the One Chicago shows remain top performers in the ratings for NBC, we’d be shocked to see the network part ways with any of the shows. And with NBC keeping its 10 p.m. block around, it’s likely the shows will continue on together for at least a few more years to come.
