Mouch (Christian Stolte) has seen better days. The Chicago Fire character was hit by a sniper in the season 11 finale, and the last we saw of him, he was not in good shape. He was bleeding out in his hospital bed, and his pulse was weakening as friends scrambled to find a doctor.

It was one of the toughest Chicago Fire finales in recent memory, but it’s not the first time that Mouch has been in danger. It’s not even the first time Mouch has been in danger during a finale. That distinction goes to the season 5 episode “My Miracle,” when the character suffered a major heart attack on the job.

What season did Mouch have a heart attack?

The episode saw the 51 team get trapped inside a burning warehouse. Severide (Taylor Kinney) is so convinced that the team isn’t going to make it that he says goodbye over the radio, and Mouch collapses due to the stress. It was a devastating moment to leave fans with for four months, but it led to one of the show’s most satisfying season premieres.

The season 6 premiere opened with Mouch recovering from his heart attack. He looks to be in solid shape, but Herrmann (David Eigenberg), who was also injured on the job, said that his pal actually flatlined when he was brought into the hospital. “You flatlined,” Herrmann noted. “I’ve seen bodies in a morgue move more than you.”

The incident forced Mouch to step back and consider what to do next. He thought about retiring from the 51, fearing that the heart attack was a sign he had gotten too old, but he decided he’d stick around for as long as he could.

We hope that Mouch recovers from his current injury, but we get the sense that he will consider retirement a second time in the season 12 premiere. He just turned 60 years old, and the forced retirement age for Chicago firefighters is 63, so it’s definitely something he’s been aware of, and we’re curious to see how the show addresses this impending decision.
