Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) has seen better days. He was shot while undercover in the season 10 finale and, in typical Chicago PD fashion, his fate was left unclear. Fans are going to have to wait until the season 11 premiere to find out if he survived.

A “what’s next” discussion about a character that dies in the premiere would not be particularly enlightening, so let’s assume that Ruzek bounces back and makes a full recovery during the first leg of the season. Where does he go from there? Does his outlook on the job change?

Is Patrick John Flueger returning to Chicago PD?

Ruzek has undergone lots of personal change in the last year. His romance with Burgess (Marina Squerciati) fell apart, and their parental dynamic was damaged after daughter, Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams) was kidnapped. More recently, though, Ruzek has been able to repair both of these situations.

Ruzek has stepped up in his parenting of Makayla after encouraging Burgess to seek out therapy. He’s also gotten closer to Burgess in recent episodes, suggesting that there may be a future in which they are romantically involved again.

What’s interesting about these two developments is that neither of these changes have occurred on the job. They are strictly personal things, and Flueger noted how the character struggled to focus on undercover work due to his desire to be with his loved ones.

"“That duality is not fun [for Ruzek], especially when he wants to go home, when he’s got a daughter, and he’s got this this woman that he’s rekindled his romance with,” he told NBC. “It’s like partying in Vegas when you’re in your 20s. It sounds awesome, [but] you just kind of grow out of these certain things, and you realize what’s important.”"

This leads us to believe that Ruzek will place more of an emphasis on family in season 12. He’s obviously been through a lot recently, and surviving a gunshot wound to the stomach may just be the thing that makes both him and Burgess realize they need to act on their feelings toward each other as soon as possible. Fingers crossed he actually survives.
