What is going on with Severide (Taylor Kinney)? The character was the centerpiece of Chicago Fire for over ten years, and then suddenly, he’s nowhere to be found. It seemed like his detour to go to an arson investigation program would be just that: a detour.

Now, though, Severide is traveling the country and working with the ATF without so much as a word about it to his wife Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) or any of his 51 friends. It’s odd behavior, and it has us wondering what the character has in store for us in season 12.

Is Taylor Kinney returning to Chicago Fire?

The most obvious component here is that Severide will return. The character was whisked away between episodes in season 11, so he will eventually have to come back, even if it’s just to deliver the bad news that he’s leaving for good. Whether or not this happens is dependent on Kinney and whether he wants to return to the show after his leave of absence.

Assuming he wants to come back full-time though, season 12 will definitely be focusing on the dynamic between Severide and Kidd. The latter has had her trust shaken, and understandably so, which means the couple will have to work to get back to where they were before Severide left. It won’t be easy, but if the show is at committed to making Stellaride work as they have been over the past few seasons, then it will be a focus.

There’s also the practical aspect of Severide being a certified arson investigator. He’s always had a talent for investigation, based on his collaborations with the OFI, so it’ll be interesting to see if he steps back from firefighting and places more of an emphasis on the OFI stuff moving forward.

It would be a logical progression for the character, and dramatically speaking, it would to explain to keep him on the show in a limited capacity, should Kinney decide that he doesn’t want to come back full-time.

So little is know about the actor’s game plan that it’s hard to speculate, but we can safely assume that Severide will play a big part in the happenings of season 12.
