Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) didn’t have the easiest time on Chicago Med. While he initially started out as a confident and capable doctor, the character suffered personal tragedies and devastating physical injuries during the last few seasons.

Fortunately, everything worked out in the end. Choi married April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) and decided to leave Gaffney to start a medical program of his own. Choi spent his 20s in the Navy. He followed in his late father’s footsteps and spent several years as a medic at an aid camp in Bagdad. He also spent time on the USS Carl Vinson, where he seemed to establish his trademark method of dealing with patients. Upon returning to Chicago, Choi joined the Gaffney Medical Center.

He was already been at Gaffney for several years when Chicago Med premiered in 2015. Trying to use the average metric for when a doctor starts their residency is useless here, because the actor who plays Choi, Brian Tee, was already well past the average. We can take this to assume that he’s spent close to a decade at Gaffney by the time we’re introduced to him.

Tee was born March 15, 1977, which currently makes him 43 years old. Because we have nothing to suggest that Choi is a different age, we can assume that the character is also 43. This is a prime example of the way that writers will align the age of the actor and the character they are playing.

Unless there’s a specific plot reason that a character should be younger or older, it’s best to keep things simple. Choi is 43, which made him slightly older than other doctors who left the show, including Will Halstead and Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard). This also means that he was 38 when the show started.
