We may be ruffling a few feathers here, but Chicago Fire is going to have to make some crucial changes in season 12. The show is still going strong, but several main characters are on the cusp of leaving, including Severide (Taylor Kinney) and Brett (Kara Killmer).

That’s not even mentioning the NBC request that certain characters be absent from episodes to cut down on budget costs. There’s a lot going on, so we thought we’d throw our hat in the ring and point to a few characters that could be excised from the show without doing much damage. Here goes nothing.

Is Emma Jacobs leaving Chicago Fire season 12?

Yes, Emma Jacobs (Caitlin Carver) is a minor character. She appeared briefly in season 11, but the way she was utilized when she was onscreen was a bit confusing. It seemed as though she was being set up as a foe for Violet (Hanako Greensmith), which makes sense given their history and the tragic passing of Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas), but then she just disappeared again.

If the point is to bring Jacobs back every once in a while to scare Violet and remind fans of what happened with Hawkins, then it may not be worth it. Unless there’s an actual arc planned, we say retire the character.

Is Severide leaving Chicago Fire season 12?

Severide is a painful but potentially necessary cut. Taylor Kinney has been unclear on whether he plans to return to the show in season 12, this lack of decisiveness has led to a narrative limbo for the writers. Suddenly, Severide is acting strangely and making decisions that are out of character (offscreen) just so he can continue to be out of the state.

If this uncertainty continues into season 12, we think it would be best to cut Severide out of the show. There would need to be some creative applied to his exit, especially given his marriage to Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), but not having to worry about his offscreen shenanigans would allow the writers to focus on the characters that are actually onscreen.

Is Wendy Seager leaving Chicago Fire season 12?

We like Wendy Seager (Andy Allo). She’s a steady presence on the show, but she tends to be at her best with paired with one other person i.e. Severide or Carver (Jake Lockett). The thing is, Severide is somewhere else in the country, and Carver’s feelings towards Seager have waned since it was revealed that they were hooking up.

There’s also the fact that Carver and Violet were shown to have some romantic chemistry towards the end of season 11, and that’s a story arc that seems to have a lot more dramatic potential. We don’t know where Seager would fit in season 12, and for that reason we suggest she get cut.
