Has Taylor Kinney revealed his future plans for Chicago Fire?
The Severide mystery continues. The character disappeared without a ton of context in Chicago Fire season 11, and has continued to make choices that keep him away from the Windy City. It’s baffled his wife, Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), and it has baffled viewers, as Severide has been the backbone of the show for over a decade.
The decision to limit the character’s screen time was, of course, not in the show’s original game plan. Taylor Kinney, the actor who plays Severide, announced that he would be taking a leave of absence, and within weeks of his announcement, he had disappeared. No official statement or social media explanation.
Why did Taylor Kinney leave Chicago Fire?
That was March 2023, and we’re happy to confirm that Kinney has been more forthright with information since. He’s appeared in a handful of posts on his girlfriend Instagram, and he even released a statement following the death of his former co-star, Treat Williams, in June. Williams played his onscreen dad during early seasons of Chicago Fire.
"“My thoughts and prayers are with Treat’s family,” Kinney wrote in an official statement. “He played my father on Chicago Fire, and was a father figure to everyone on set. I’ll always relish our conversations and his uncanny ability to light up a room. We all send love, he will be missed.”"

It’s telling, however, that Kinney has returned to social media and made comments on the passing of a former co-star, but has not discussed his plans to return to Chicago Fire. He has not spoken on why he chose to leave, either. This is irregular as far as leaves of absence go, as most of the One Chicago stars who have exited the show has been open about discussing their reasons.
Because Kinney and the Chicago Fire showrunners have been so quiet about future plans, there is hope that they will reunite for season 12. Our suggestion is not to assume that Severide is gone for good until the showrunners issue an official press release.
