Dean Archer (Steven Weber) is the resident grump at Chicago Med. He’s always got a problem with someone or something, but he’s been a part of the show for multiple seasons now, and the more we get to know him, the more likable he becomes.

Archer became a more prominent character in season 8, getting more screen time and shouldering plot lines that would have been reserved for other doctors in the past. With this added screen time comes more drama, though. What is going to happen to the character in season 9? Is he still in bad health? Let’s discuss.

Is Archer still sick in Chicago Med season 9?

Archer is still dealing with the effects of end-stage renal disease. It’s gotten progressively worse since the character injured himself early in season 8, and word has gotten out that he’s not doing well, despite his efforts to keep it a secret. He needs a kidney transplant as soon as possible.

For a while it seemed like Archer’s estranged son, Sean Archer (Luigi Sottile), was going to be able to provide him with said kidney, but relapsed, and donors have to be sober for at least six months to ensure a transplant is successful. Archer was forced to go back to the drawing board as a result, and the season finale wrapped up with him in pretty dire condition.

All that said, we don’t think Chicago Med will kill Archer. With the string of character departures that have hit the show in the last season, including Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) and Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), Med can’t afford to axe yet another central character. Plus, Archer has become something of a fan favorite due to his blunt bedside manner and his friendship with Dr. Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram).

Expect to see Archer get his transplant in season 9. The character should be back to full health afterwards, and ideally, back to kinda/sorta flirting with Asher on the job. Chicago Med hasn’t made it clear what it intends to do with these two, but they have interesting chemistry and we want to see more of them!
