Chicago Fire typically returns to NBC in the fall. However, the latest update from NBC has confirmed the next season will not be coming in 2023.

As fans who have followed Chicago Fire from the beginning know, new seasons typically always premiere sometime in late September or early October with the One Chicago series being a staple on NBC’s fall schedule since 2012. The one exception came in 2020 when season 9 was forced to begin in November due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

While it’s been over a decade now since NBC’s fall lineup did not include Chicago Fire, fans are about to experience their longest hiatus yet as NBC has announced the series — as well as its sister series Chicago Med and Chicago PD — will not be coming back in the fall. Instead, the shows are being held for midseason meaning fans will have to wait until 2024 for new episodes to begin airing.

Why isn’t Chicago Fire coming back in the fall?

Originally, NBC had planned to air new seasons of all three One Chicago shows, including Chicago Fire, in the fall; however, due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, production cannot begin on the new seasons. With production delayed, NBC has been forced to delay the shows’ returns in planning ahead for a fall lineup that will include reality series as well as new seasons of shows that had been previously filmed or were acquired by the network.

While there will not be new episodes of the One Chicago show coming fans’ way in the fall, there is at least one positive scheduling update for One Chicago fans. In announcing that the One Chicago series will be held for midseason, NBC did reveal that the opening 8 p.m. timeslot on its Wednesday night schedule in the fall will be used to bring fans One Chicago reruns.
