Chicago Med season 9 gets disappointing release update from NBC
By Cody Schultz
It’s going to be a long year for One Chicago fans. While fans of NBC’s One Chicago series are used to having to deal with the summer hiatus every year, the gap between new seasons of Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, and Chicago Med is going to be longer than anyone expected.
Due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the writers and actors are both on strike which means that the writers cannot work on new scripts and the actors cannot begin work filming new episodes until a new deal is struck with the studios. With the strikes expected to last into the fall, NBC has become the latest network to shift its fall schedule around and the latest change is not good news for One Chicago fans.
Because work cannot begin on the One Chicago shows, NBC has announced all three One Chicago dramas will be bumped to its midseason schedule. This means we will not be seeing the new seasons arrive this fall including the upcoming ninth season of Chicago Med.
When will Chicago Med return?
At this time, NBC has only revealed that Chicago Med and the One Chicago franchise will return as part of its midseason line and has not given an exact return date for the shows. Depending on when the strike is resolved and when production is able to begin on season 9, there is a chance we could see the show return sometime in January.
NBC has often debuted its midseason series in early to late January so there is a chance NBC will try to have the shows ready to go at the top of 2024 if possible. However, a January return would likely be contingent upon the studios and unions reaching new deals by early fall.

Typically, production on Chicago Med begins in mid-to-late July and the shows typically premiere two months later in September. With that timeline in mind, so long as the strike wraps by or before November there is a strong chance Chicago Med season 9 would be ready to go for January.
However, if the strike is prolonged, there is a chance midseason might mean the shows won’t return until February or March.
