Chicago Fire takes artistic liberties like any good show. One can only go far with authenticity before one compromises the very thing that makes viewers want to tune in. The firefighting drama likes to play up the personal strife that each of the characters go through, but a crucial point of praise has been its adherence to real life firefighting practices.

While newer shows like Fire Country have been criticized for showing incorrect ways of working in the field, Chicago Fire has consistently been singled out for being as close to the real thing as it can. The latest expert to weigh in was Dushone Roman, a firefighter and star of the new reality show LA Fire & Rescue.

Is Chicago Fire realistic?

Roman, who has spent years putting his life on the line to protect others, is an avid fan of Chicago Fire. “I don’t tell a lot of people, because they tend to give you a lot of crap for it, but I actually love the show,” he told TV Insider. “I love the back-and-forth banter. That’s exactly what we do in the fire services. Watching Chicago Fire brings back memories of what we do.”

The real life firefighter admitted that there are some things the show gets wrong, but he views them more as humorous accidents that ignorant depictions of what he does for a living. “They get things right for the most part, but in the medical scenes, there’s funny EMS stuff, say, where oxygen on people’s face are placed on wrong,” he explained.”

Dick Wolf is the creator of both Chicago Fire and LA Fire & Rescue, which is not something that’s lost on Roman. “It would be awesome to cameo on [Chicago Fire] and meet the crew,” he noted. “I know they have at least one actual Chicago firefighter on the show — Tony Ferraris, who plays Tony — but we need to bring our LA flair over there. We got to make that happen.”

While it wouldn’t be an official crossover (one is reality, the other fiction), it would be fun to see Chicago Fire incorporate more real life firefighters in cameo roles!
