The Good Doctor set up some compelling storylines during the season 6 finale, but one fate that was left in the air was Dr. Andrews. The character stepped down as the president of the San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital, which suggested a potential exit, but he is also dating a nurse named Dalisay Villanueva (Elfina Luk), so it was unclear whether he would be sticking around.

Things have gotten exponentially more complicated since the finale aired. The Good Doctor has been delayed to 2024 due to the ongoing writers and actors strike, and Hill Harper, the actor who plays Dr. Andrews, has announced his plans to run for the U.S. senate. Does this mean the end of the character?

Harper announced his plans to run for the on July 10. He posted a video message to Instagram, along with a caption that read: “As a union organizer, single dad, and business owner, I understand the challenges Michiganders are facing right now. They demand a Senator who’ll do what’s right for ALL of us – not just lobbyists. That’s why today, I’m announcing my campaign for U.S. Senate!”

It was a surprising development for those who only know Harper as an actor, but its unsurprising given how outspoken he’s been about politics in the past. He’s good friends with President Barack Obama, and was even appointed to the President’s Cancer Panel, a group assigned to work with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and make recommendations to the White House, in 2012.

U.S. Senate is obviously an important job, so if Harper were to get elected in the state of Michigan, it would be extremely difficult to balance his new duties as Dr. Andrews on The Good Doctor. It’s not clear whether the show made his character’s fate open-ended, so that they could write him off if the showrunners needed to, but it may prove extremely helpful in the longterm.

Harper has not addressed his plans to leave or stay with regards to The Good Doctor, but all the signs point to the former, so that he can focus on his political career.
