It didn’t seem that long ago that Evan Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas) was a vital part of the Chicago Fire team. The character seemed a little confrontational at first, but the more time we spent with him the more we realized he was merely trying to do the right thing.

Hawkins’ eventual romance with Violet (Hanako Greensmith) was another development that made the character appealing to fans. Then, in the span of a single, season 11 episode, he was gone. He died in a collapsed building trying to save the lives of others. Violet was traumatized, and fans were shocked.

Is Hawkins returning to Chicago Fire?

Is there a chance we could see Hawkins return in season 12? Well, there’s a precedent for dead characters who have resurfaced in the past. Someone like Andy Darden (Corey Sorenson), who died in the Chicago Fire pilot, returned to the show for a flashback episode in season 3. We can hypothetically see an instance in which Hawkins is shown via flashback, or via Violet’s memory.

The thing is, it’s been a while since the character’s death. If we were going to see him in some capacity, it probably would have been during season 11, when Violet was dealing with the trauma of losing him. The season finale, which saw Violet being flirtatious with Sam Carver (Jake Lockett), suggests that she’s already on the road to recovery in terms of being able to show romantic interest in others.

It would not only be belated to show Hawkins in season 12, but it would undo some of the progress that Violet has made over the course of season 11. She still has a ways to go, but she has been able to get out of the mourning period and resume a lifestyle and outlook similar to what she had when she first met Hawkins. That’s a good thing.

All things considered, we are confident that Hawkins will not be returning in season 12. He will be missed, but it’s better to miss him than to see him return under extenuating circumstances.
