Jay Halstead may be gone, but it’s hard to overstate how important he was to Chicago PD. During the show’s first ten seasons, he was a crucial foil for Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), and his bond with the rest of the IU made him someone who was constantly be sought out for help and/or advice.

It’s tough not having him in the mix, but it’s nice to know that the actor who plays him, Jesse Lee Soffer, continues to be friendly with the cast and has even returned as a director. While there are too many great Chicago PD episodes involving Halstead to count, Soffer does feel that one of them is head and shoulders above the rest.

What is the best Chicago PD episode?

Soffer’s favorite episode is “Reckoning”, which was the season 6 finale. The episode revolved around the election of aspiring politician Brian Kelton (John C. McGinley), and the struggle to keep the IU alive, despite Kelton’s desire to squash the department. Soffer told Access that the show was really hitting its stride with this episode. “It keeps getting stronger,” he explained. “We just filmed our [season 6] finale, and I think it’s the best episode we’ve ever done.”

While everyone has their own favorite episode, it’s hard to argue with Soffer’s pick. “Reckoning” is a classic Chicago PD offering, making perfect use of a suspenseful premise and the ensemble cast. It’d be safe to assume that Soffer’s favorite scene would be from his favorite episode, but in fact, the actor picked a scene from a different episode during a One Chicago Day interview in 2022.

“My favorite scene that I have done I think it’s the first [season],” he revealed. “There’s a scene where we kind of all get into like a tactical line and I just remember feeling so much adrenaline and so much excitement because I knew this show was going to be kind of badass.”

The scene was in the episode “8:30 AM”, which was the second part of a One Chicago crossover, and it involved a bomb going off in front of a hospital. The scene is indeed, badass.
