April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) seemed as though she had left the building for good. She left between seasons 7 and 8 of Chicago Med, and there was very little mention outside of the reasoning why she left. It was an underwhelming exit, especially for a character who had been so crucial to the appeal of the show.

Fortunately, April returned in season 8. She not only reconciled with Ethan Choi (Brian Tee), but married him and decided to open a clinic for the less fortunate in Chicago. It was a storybook end for the character, but some fans are curious as to whether she will come back in season 9.

Is April coming back to Chicago Med?

It’s certainly possible. The character still lives in Chicago, and both her and her husband work in the medical field, so there could easily be a storyline that brings them into contact with the staff of Gaffney Medical Center. The thing is, there’s very little story left to tell when it comes to April. All of the unresolved points about her character were cleared up in season 8, and it seemed like she was ready to embark on the next chapter of her life with Ethan.

DaCosta talked about giving the character a proper ending during a recent interview with Screen Rant. She revealed that the only condition in which she would return would be if the character had become a doctor in her time off-screen. She got her wish.

“I think that kind of gave her a lot of credibility and expectation that she would be a doctor,” DaCosta explained. “So if ever in this or any other dimension, April Sexton were to return to screen, it would have to be as a doctor.”

We loved seeing April mature over the course of the show, but we think it would be best if they let her continue to mature off-screen rather than bring her back for another, potentially unnecessary, cameo.
