Dr. Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) did not have the easiest season 8 on Chicago Med. She was forced to watch as Gaffney Medical Center got taken over by money-hungry investors, and turned into a for-profit hospital that prioritized the bottom line over proper health care. It went against everything the character has stood for throughout her career.

Fortunately, season 9 looks to reverse some of the damage. Thanks to some quick thinking by Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), the aforementioned powers that be are forced to sell the hospital, which means Goodwin is primed to restore Gaffney back to what it should be.

Is Goodwin returning to Chicago Med?

Goodwin will, of course, have to do so without the help of Halstead. The latter broke protocol by manipulating a medical result, and effectively making it seem as though the tech the hospital has been forced to use is faulty. The gambit had the desired effect of clearing out the people in charge but it also meant that Halstead’s time at Gaffney had come to an end.

Goodwin was visibly saddened by the realization that Halstead, her partner-in-crime over the last few seasons, will be moving to Seattle. That being said, Goodwin will have the rest of the Gaffney team, including Dr. Marcel (Dominic Rains) and Maggie (Marlyne Barrett) to rely on as she puts it all back together.

Something that will undoubtedly play a role in Goodwin’s season 9 storyline is her ongoing health struggle. The character revealed that she’s been dealing with type 2 diabetes in season 8, and the seriousness of her condition could lead to some tense and downright frightening moments.

Merkerson, who suffers from diabetes in her own life, talked about the importance of depicting it on the small screen. “To bring the disease up in the show through my character allows us to see firsthand what people go through when they have type 2 diabetes”, she told Shadow and Act. “I think whenever you have the opportunity to voice something like that, it’s a public service to the community.”

We can’t wait to see what unexpected storylines will develop for the character moving forward.
