Chicago PD has joined Chicago Med and Chicago Fire in terms of being renewed for another season. While it didn’t receive the multi-season renewal that it had gotten in years prior, there is still cause for celebration knowing that we will get to see Voight (Jason Beghe) and the gang back in action. Especially given the cliffhanger ending of season 10.

Sadly, fans will be hanging off that cliff for the rest of 2023. Chicago PD is not returning to NBC this year, due to the ongoing writers and actors strikes. Neither organization will contribute to the making of scripted network shows until their conditions are met, which means that the time slot usually reserved for Chicago PD in the fall will be filled by game shows and reality shows.

The police procedural will be returning to NBC in 2024, along with the rest of the One Chicago franchise. It makes sense, given that several of the writers and actors involved with the franchise have been spotted on the picket line, and have voiced their support for the strikes on social media.

When is Chicago PD season 11 coming out? (Release date predictions)

The earliest that Chicago PD could return to NBC is January 2024. That is assuming the writers and actors strike can be resolved, and both parties have time to script, shoot, and produce entire episodes, however, which remains to be seen.

Warren Leight cast a bit of doubt on the possibility that networks would be ready for a January return when he tweeted about the strikes. The former Law & Order showrunner explained that things would have to move quickly if NBC plans to air a 13 episode season of some of their most popular shows (the chances of airing a complete 20-23 episode season are virtually nonexistent).

“Today many network dramas would have begun shooting their 4th episode of the fall season,” Leight explained. “If the strike were somehow to end by Labor Day and shooting were to begin in early fall, the networks might be able to salvage a 13 episode season. The clock keeps ticking.”

Unfortunately, writers and actors strikes are expected to continue well into the fall. All we can do is hope for the best, but assuming that the studios and the unions disagree into the end of the year, than we may be looking at a return date closer to spring.
