Chicago Fire is an NBC institution. The show has been on the air for over a decade, and has become the anchor of the network’s Wednesday lineup alongside Chicago Med and PD. It should come as no surprise that the has been renewed for another season. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait for quite a while before they get it.

Chicago Fire is not coming in 2023, despite being originally slated for a September premiere. It will instead be airing in 2024, due to the ongoing writers and actors strike, and the fact that there is nobody to work on the shows until strike is resolved.

When is Chicago Fire season 12 coming out? (Release date predictions)

On the bright side, the people responsible for making one of our favorite shows will be more fairly compensated for their work. The flip side, of course, is that we don’t know for sure when Chicago Fire will return. January would be the best possible time, given that it would allow for the largest number of episodes to be released, but there would need to be major strides in the negotiations between the writers, actors, and studios in the next few weeks.

If not, the next release window that networks would be looking at is May 2024. That’s a whopping four months down the line, and would shorten the episode count to roughly a third of a normal run (6-8 episodes). It’s certainly not ideal, but as former Law & Order: SVU showrunner Warren Leight said on Twitter, “If the strike were somehow to end by Labor Day and shooting were to begin in early fall, the networks might be able to salvage a 13 episode season. The clock keeps ticking.”

There have been some strides made. The AMPTP, or the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, have offered a counterproposal to the writers guild of America. It’s unclear whether the guild will accept the terms, however, or continue to push for their original demands. In the meantime, we will be watching Chicago Fire reruns.
