FBI is still going strong. The procedural drama has not only been renewed for a sixth season, but it’s spawned an entire franchise that includes FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International. The issue is, the show won’t be returning as soon as fans initially thought. CBS has confirmed that FBI will be pushed back to 2024 instead of fall 2023.

This is due to the ongoing writers and actors strike. There’s simply no way for networks to put out scripted dramas when the people who typically work on them are refusing on the grounds that they need to be better compensated. FBI and its spin-offs are predicted to return next year, but the longer the strike persists, the smaller the seasons will likely be.

When is FBI season 6 coming out? (Release date predictions)

If FBI were to premiere in January, then it would be able to put out 12-13 episodes, or half a normal season. This is best case scenario given the constraints, but the window for this to be a viable option is closing fast. The longer it takes for the writers, actors, and studios to come to an agreement, the further scripted dramas will be pushed back.

Deadline ran a piece in which it offered an alternate release month: May 2024. That’s right, a full four months later. That’s assuming that the strike runs into the end of year, allowing time for the writers and actors to get back to work without enforcing an unrealistic time crunch. The issue with a May release, of course, is a smaller release window.

Instead of releasing 12-13 episodes, a season premiering in May would be airing closer to 6-8 episodes. That’s roughly the third of a regular season length, or a sort of miniseries equivalent of what fans are used to.

It would be difficult, especially for shows that are on the bubble of getting renewed or cancelled, but given the stability of the FBI franchise, we’re confident that the show will be fine in releasing a more condensed season before regrouping for season 7.
