Nicky Reagan-Boyle has been part of Blue Bloods from the very beginning. She was introduced in season 1, and has undergone countless changes over the course of the show. She’s not only aged, but she’s gone away to college and established herself as a character outside of just being the kid of Erin Reagan.

Nicky is a peripheral character within the show, however, and the rumors that have hounded the show ahead of season 14 have mostly had to do with the notion that certain characters will be cut from the show to limit the budget of each episode. Is Nicky going to be part of this cost-cutting?

Is Sami Gayle leaving Blue Bloods?

Fortunately, the answer is no. The stars of Blue Bloods– Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, and Moynahan, agreed to take pay cuts ahead of season 14, so that the cast and crew can remain intact. This means that all of the supporting characters you’ve come to know and love over the course of the show will still be around. At least, as much as they’ve been around in recent years.

Nicky’s diminished role within the show (she was absent from season 12 and was in one episode in season 13) is reflective of the personal life of the actor who plays her: Sami Gayle. The decision to have Nicky move to San Francisco coincided with Gayle’s decision to attend school at Columbia University. That said, Blue Bloods showrunner Kevin Wade is eager to get the character (and the Gayle) back on the show.

“Hopefully she’ll swing by”, Wade told Express in October 2022. “Once it had become long enough, it was almost like, ‘Well, we should bring her back at least for a family dinner.’ We actually were going to do that last season, and I don’t think her schedule matched up with ours.”

Gayle has no plans to stop acting, and even appeared in a stage production in January 2023, so it’s less a matter of waning interest and more an issue of scheduling. There are plenty of stories to tell on Blue Bloods (especially with a shortened season 14), but it’s definitely worth bringing Nicky back and fleshing her character out, especially as she gets older.

Kevin Wade isn’t the only Blue Bloods veteran who thinks so. Len Cariou, who plays the patriarch of the Reagan family, said that he’d like to see the show focus on the younger Reagans as they get older. Gayle, meanwhile, told Country Living that she wants to continue to work alongside (and learn from) her onscreen mother, Bridget Moynahan.

“Watching her over the years has helped me to become a better actor”, she explained. “My favorite thing about our scenes together is that they often tackle universal, mother/daughter experiences. I always walk away having gleaned something about a situation I’ve encountered with my actual mom or with foresight as to how to deal with a situation in the future.” Hopefully it’s a future we see fully realized in season 14!
