Chicago Med has had some close calls in the last year. There were concerns that the show would either be cancelled or relocated to another time slot when NBC teased the possibility of changing their nighttime schedule, and then the show was taken off the fall slate and pushed back to 2024 when the writers and actors strike got underway.

These scheduling changes, coupled with the exit of longtime characters like Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) and Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), may have some fans worried about the future of the medical drama, and whether the delay will increase its chances of getting cancelled.

When is Chicago Med coming back?

Well, we’re happy to report that things are looking up. For one, NBC has already renewed Chicago Med for another season, so barring some major (and we mean major) changes, it is guaranteed to be on the network for at least one more year. Then there’s the fact that the writers are close to striking an agreement with the AMPTP, which means we’re significantly closer to starting up production on scripted dramas.

Deadline spoke to a handful of network executives recently, and they opined that TV shows, and procedural dramas like Chicago Med, in particular, could be back on the air as soon as March 2024. This is a far cry from the estimates that were made last month, where ranged from the summer to next fall at the worst, which would have meant an entire year without scripted shows.

Med, like the rest of the One Chicago franchise, has minimal visual effects, so they will be easier to get back on track and produce. The actors are still on strike, of course, and a deal will need to be struck with them before cameras can start rolling.

The fact that things are starting to move again has us feeling positive, though. Not only will we have Med back, we could have it back sooner than we all thought possible.
