Chicago Fire makes huge change ahead of season 12
Chicago Fire prides itself on consistency. You know what you’re going to get from the show when it comes on, and you get it. This level of consistency is why Chicago Fire has managed to stay on the air for 11 seasons, and why it shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. It will, however, have a different leader at the helm.
Derek Haas has served as the showrunner of the firefighting drama since 2012, and he’s written 226 of the show’s episodes to boot, but he announced that he would be stepping down from the position back in November 2022. The decision was doubly impactful, since it came right before the announcement that Taylor Kinney would be taking a leave of absence. When Fire returns, it will be in different hands.
Who is the new Chicago Fire showrunner?
Fortunately, those hands have already proven to be very capable. According to Variety, Andrea Newman will be stepping in as the sole Chicago Fire showrunner. Newman is no stranger to the One Chicago franchise, as she’s been co-showrunners with Haas for the duration of the show’s history. She’s also been credited as an executive producer.
Newman was the most obvious choice to assume the main position after Haas’ exit, based on her both her history with the franchise and her impressive resume, which dates back to the 90s. She was a co-producer on Felicity from 1999 to 2000, and produced long stretches of beloved shows like 24 and Cold Case. When it comes to fashioning TV that’s slick and entertaining, Newman is one of the experienced.

It’s a good thing, too, because Chicago Fire is going through a particularly sizable transition. The show has been delayed due to the Hollywood strikes, and the fate of several iconic characters like Kinney’s Severide and Christian Stolte’s Mouch are still unclear heading into 2024.
There’s a lot to deal with, especially with the actors still on strike, but we’re confident that Newman is the right person for the job.
