Chicago PD has life again. The police procedural shut down, as all scripted shows, did, when the writers and actors decided to go on strike. NBC pushed the season 11 premiere back to 2024, and production, which was slated to start around September, was postponed indefinitely. It seemed like it would be a long time before we got new PD episodes.

Fortunately, it’s looking like there’s a return date in sight. While production is still halted, due to the ongoing strike of the actors, NBC has agreed to open up the writers room for the show, which means scripts for upcoming episodes will start to come together.

Is Chicago PD coming back in 2023?

According to Variety, the writers rooms have also opened up for Chicago Med and Chicago Fire. This will greatly expediate the production process when the actors do reach an agreement with the studios, which in turns will speed up the premiere date of the aforementioned season 11.

These are all points that were addressed by PD star LaRoyce Hawkins earlier this year. During a masterclass discussion at LSU, Hawkins noted that the writers would need to get a head start on the writing process, so that when it came time to shoot, there were enough episodes and storylines to put up on the screen. Makes perfect sense to us.

“Naturally, after the writers strike, it’s going to take the writers a while to start warming up their rooms again and starting to conceptualize stories again,” the actor noted “So we might need like a three-week buffer… From my personal research, we have a big hill to climb before we can find an agreement. I’m faithful and optimistic that it will only be a couple more months, if that, that we’re off.”

Hawkins wasn’t far off. His comments were made in July, and here we are in October, taking a big step closer to the return of scripted TV as we know it. The Screen Actors Guild are currently taking meetings with the studios, so things appear to be moving in a positive direction overall, which could mean we get to see our favorite shows back on the small screen as early as March 2024.
