Blue Bloods is a hot property. The show has been a steady ratings draw for 13 years, and has already been renewed for another season by CBS. It’s provided stars like Donnie Wahlberg and Bridget Moynahan with career-defining roles, and has served as an anchor for the late career of legend Tom Selleck. Is it any wonder why people want to join the cast?

We’ve already talked about the cast members that were hesitant to join the show, or the ones who nearly turned down their career-defining role, but Nicholas Turturro is the rare actor who wants to return to the show despite the fact that his character hasn’t been seen in several years. Let’s unpack what happened.

What happened to Renzulli on Blue Bloods?

Turturro made his Blue Bloods debut in the show’s first episode. He played Anthony Renzulli, the NYPD Sergeant who trained Jamie Reagan (Will Estes) and his late brother Joe Reagan. Renzulli is an experienced cop known for his keen eye and ability to hone in on details that others would let pass. He was never the star of a given episode, but he was a reliable presence during the show’s first six seasons.

Then, suddenly, he was gone. Renzulli doesn’t appear beyond the episode “Cursed”, despite still being alive and presumably, a Sergeant in the same exact precinct. What happened? Well, some fans attribute his absence to him having already “served his purpose” within the grand scene of the show, but we’ve never actually gotten a reason. Neither Turturro nor the CBS execs spoke on why Renzulli has gone MIA for the last six seasons.

That being said, Turturro is open to the possibility of returning. He campaigned for Renzulli to come back, and perhaps even lead his own spin-off show, back in 2013. “Write to CBS and Blue Bloods that we need more Renzulli”, he tweeted. “Maybe he needs a spinoff wouldn’t that be a great idea.”

Unfortunately, not much has come of the campaign. A 2022 Reddit thread resparked interest in the character, but given how much time has passed, and how many characters the show focuses on currently, it’s unlikely that they would bring Renzulli back. He will likely remain a remnant of the show’s early years.
