Joe Cruz is one of those Chicago Fire characters you can’t imagine the show without. There are long stretches where he isn’t given much to do, but even when he’s relegated to giving advice or making a crucial save on an emergency call, his presence makes a difference. A big part of what makes Cruz so appealing is the performance by Joe Minoso.

Few actors are better at capturing the show’s appeal in a short amount of time than Minoso, so we were especially interested to see what he would choose as his favorite Chicago Fire episode. He made a definitive decision during an interview with the Chicago Tribune, and we’ll be honest: it’s an episode we didn’t expect!

What Chicago Fire episode does Cruz does Zumba?

Minoso’s favorite episode is season 3, episode 7, which is also titled “No One Touches Anything.” Long time fans will also know it as the Zumba episode. Basically, the story revolves around Brett (Kara Killmer) and her decision to attend a Zumba class, only to find out that the instructor is her 51 buddy Cruz!

It’s a hilarious reveal and one of the most laugh out loud moments in the entire show. It was also, apparently, Minoso’s idea. The actor is actually a Zumba instructor, and thought it would be funny if his character had the same passion when he wasn’t putting out fires. “It was more fun watching everyone try to follow me”, he recalled. “It was quite possibly the funniest thing I’ve ever seen.”

While we tend to think of seminal Cruz storylines like the birth of his son Otis, or his near death experience in the season 10 premiere, it’s much more on-brand for the character (and the actor, frankly) to choose an episode that shows a lighter side of Chicago Fire. It’s all about finding the balance, and were it not for characters like Cruz, it would be a far less entertaining series.
