Christopher Meloni, known for his iconic role as Detective Elliot Stabler, was a fixture on Law and Order: SVU for 12 seasons before his character’s departure. Stabler’s storyline took an unexpected turn when he was placed on administrative leave during a shooting incident in the season 12 finale, although he made a brief return in season 22.

Why did he really leave Law and Order: SVU?

After years of speculation, in an interview with Men’s Health in August 2021 Christopher Meloni revealed the reason why he initially left Law and Order: SVU, before stepping back into the shoes of his character for the Law and Order: Organised Crime, was due to issues with his contract negotiation.
