3 One Chicago couples we’re rooting for (and 1 we hope breaks up)
Love is complicated. We’ve seen countless romances come and go over the years on One Chicago, and each was special in its own unique way. The reasons they fell apart have also been unique. We have seen relationships crumble due to premature death, a person moving, or changes in outlook. You never can tell what it’ll be.
Conversely, there are couples that are still going strong on One Chicago, and we truly hope that they make it long term. Well, most of them. As you’ll see, we’ve assembled three couples that we think should go the distance, and one that may be better served splitting up in 2024.
Rooting for: Casey and Brett (Chicago Fire)
It was a bummer to see Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Brett (Kara Killmer) go their separate ways in the season 11 premiere, which made it incredibly satisfying to see them reconcile, and even look at marriage as a possibility. The season ended with Casey proposing to Brett, and while we didn’t get the answer, we feel like it makes the most sense for her to say “yes.”
Both people have become parents in recent years, unorthodox though their parenting situation may be, and have realized that they still have feelings for each other despite no longer being a couple. Even if it means Brett leaves the show, we hope Brettsey make it down the altar.
Rooting for: Ruzek and Burgess (Chicago PD)
How could you not root for these two? Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) and Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) have been put through the ringer during the last couple seasons of Chicago PD, and the former is currently fighting for his life after being rushed to the hospital for a gunshot wound. They have a long and storied history together, and they are both committed to raising Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams) above all else.

Besides, they deserve to be happy. They clearly help one another through their traumas, and have slowly but surely become the defining couple on Chicago PD (more on that later). Assuming Ruzek survives getting shot, we feel like him and Burgess are meant to be.
Rooting for: Severide and Kidd (Chicago Fire)
This one is complicated. Severide (Taylor Kinney) has not done a good job of keeping Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) in the loop during his time away from Chicago, and the season 12 finale of Chicago Fire makes it seem as though he may not be returning for some time. We hope that’s not the case, but even if it is, we hope Severide and Kidd manage to find common ground and work on improving their communication skills.
These two have been together for years, and just recently tied the knot. It would be a tremendous waste if they decided to split up after less than 12 months of marriage– especially since the One Chicago universe is dealing a similar situation elsewhere.
Rooting against: Halstead and Upton (Chicago PD)
This relationship is done for. Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) left to fight drug cartels in Central America and has made little to no effort to keep Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) updated on when or if he plans to come back anytime soon. Upton was kidnapped and nearly killed at one point during season 10, and Halstead still failed to pick up the phone. We don’t blame her for taking off her wedding ring shortly after.
If there are no plans to bring Halstead back to Chicago, then there’s really no point in dragging out his marriage to Upton. A split would allow Upton to progress as a character. At least, it will before she leaves the show in season 11. Variety hasn’t made it clear when Upton plans to exit, but we hope the writers give her some personal clarity along the way.
