For many, it’s harder to find a bad episode of Chicago PD than a good one. The procedural drama is impressively consistent for having been on the air for a decade, and based on the thrilling way that season 10 wrapped up, it seems like the consistency will continue well into the future.

The issue with having such a high bar, of course, is that it gets tricky to pick out one episode that encapsulates all of the Chicago PD strengths. The chemistry between the actors, the reliance on the ensemble, the twists and turns of the cases they take on… there’s a lot to consider.

That being said, IMDb has spoken, and their officially ranking of the show has one episode besting all the others with an impressive 9.2 rating (out of 10, of course).

What is the best episode of Chicago PD?

The episode in question is “Homecoming”, which aired in 2018 and deals with arguably the most tragic death in the entire Chicago PD canon. The episode follows Voight (Jason Beghe) as he goes on a rampage to avenge his friend/former peer Alvin Olinsky (Elias Koteas) after he’s stabbed and killed in prison. At the same time, Lt. Denny Woods (Mykelti Williamson) looks to exploit Voight’s vengeful mind state and take him down for good.

Anybody familiar with Chicago PD knows how strong “Homecoming” is. It’s one of the best ever showcases for Voight, who’s guilt over the circumstances in which Olinsky was killed reverberate throughout the entire story. Olinsky remains one of the most beloved characters in PD history despite his corrupt actions, and it’s largely due to to Koteas’ charming performance. With him dying in such a brutal manner, it proved that PD was a show that was willing to challenge and devastate its viewers for the sake of good storytelling.

It helps that Lt. Woods is one of the most indelible bad guys in PD history, as well. Basically, the show was firing on all cylinders, and the delicate balance of intense crime drama with searing human emotion made for the perfect, hour long storm of television. “Homecoming” narrowly edges out the episodes “The Other Side” and “Start Digging”, which are tied for second place.
