The Rookie is still going strong after five years on ABC. The police drama has been renewed for a sixth season, even if fans have to wait much longer than usual due to the actors strikes. The strike made it so that the cast members of the show were not been able to promote or discuss what will happen with their characters in 2024, but there have been plenty of exciting tidbits from the producers and showrunner.

There have been major developments in recent weeks, though, like the resolution of both the writers and actors strike, so we thought now would be the perfect time to assemble the information we have and prepare for the return of everybody’s favorite police officer.

Does The Rookie season 6 have a release date?

In the macro sense, yes and in the micro sense, no. ABC has confirmed that The Rookie will be coming back and resuming its usual time slot in 2024, so we know that we don’t have to wait another year before finding out what happened to John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and the gang.

Given how recently the actors strike was resolved, ABC is still figuring out what monthThe Rookie will be able to return in 2024. The show could be back as early as January, but it could also take as long to come back as March or July.

It’s all dependent on whether the cast and crew want to get a head start and shoot during the holidays. The consensus among industry insiders is that The Rookie could start shooting in late November or early December at the earliest. Other procedural shows like Law & Order and Chicago Fire opened up their writers rooms and announced dates for crew members to prep soundstages before the strike was resolved, so hopefully this speeds up the process.

Will Nathan Fillion be in The Rookie season 6?

There were some concerns regarding Fillion’s involvement, and whether his commitments to upcoming DC films would get in the way of his Rookie schedule. DC boss James Gunn has stated that Fillion will be playing Guy Gardener aka Green Lantern, in the 2025 reboot Superman: Legacy, as well as DC-related TV shows and video games.

It’s a full-time gig, and given that The Rookie has been hit with various delays due to the strike, showrunner Alexi Hawley was asked whether Fillion would have to be replaced as the titular character. The answer? According to TV Line, a succinct “Nope!”

Fillion has spoken at length about how much he enjoys playing Nolan, so it should come as no surprise that he will make both jobs work. He told the Toronto Sun that he felt the character of Nolan, who decides to reset his life and become a police officer, became especially relatable after the pandemic.

“I think there’s something relatable about the redo and the restart”, the actor pointed out. “Dropping everything and push into something entirely different. That’s a new reality for a lot of people, especially coming out of the pandemic. We’ve all reprioritized and made changes. People have quit jobs and people can relate to change.”

Is there a Rookie season 6 trailer?

Unfortunately, there is not yet a trailer for the new season of The Rookie and it’s unlikely that we’ll be getting one for season 6 anytime soon. Filming on the new season has not yet begun and with the show’s return still up in the air, there is a chance we might not get a trailer for the season for several months.

As soon as a trailer for the season is released, we’ll update this piece with said trailer or promo.

Has The Rookie season 6 started filming yet?

The Rookie is no longer being held up by the actors strike, but the fact that it was resolved on November 8 means the show will still need several weeks before its ready to resume production. The writers strike being resolved early has allowed several network shows to open up writers rooms and begin drafting the stories that will make up their respective 2024 seasons.

ABC’s eagerness to resume production makes sense, given that the quicker shows get back on track, the more episodes they will be able to produce. Given that the production timeline is so much shorter than usual, every second counts. It also means that season 6 will likely be the shortest season of The Rookie to date.

The Rookie season 6 might be longer than expected

Previous seasons have averaged 20 episodes, but the abbreviated schedule will likely cut this number down by a few. The widely held belief is that season 6 will have 10-13 episodes, which may be a smaller number but is much better than the 6-8 that was floated as a worst case scenario if the actors strike stretches into the new year.

This means that season 6 will wind up being closer in episode count to season 3, which was cut short due to the pandemic and wound up with an episode count of 14.
