It’s official! Taylor Kinney, the centerpiece of Chicago Fire, will be returning in season 12 after taking a multi-episode hiatus in season 11. The reasons why the actor took a hiatus remain unclear, but The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that his character, Kelly Severide, has been written back into the show and will feature heavily in the first couple episodes of the season.

This is an exciting yet somewhat unexpected development for Chicago Fire. While there was certainly hope that Kinney would come back to show, there was no expectation that his return would be announced in the midst of the actors strike. Due to the fact that members of the guild can’t promote shows and films, Kinney is unable to speak on his return until the strike is resolved.

Will Severide return for Chicago Fire season 12?

There’s also some contradictory information depending on which outlet you get the story from. While The Hollywood Reporter claims that Kinney’s presence throughout season 12 has not yet been clarified, a reporter for Deadline said that the actor is expected to return full time. We hope this turns out to be true, as Chicago Fire has relied heavily on Severide to lead the show, especially after the initial departure of co-star/co-lead Jesse Spencer in season 10.

The fact that Severide will be returning also saves the Chicago Fire writers a massive headache in terms of how to deal with the marriage between the character and Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) in season 12. Things looked bad for the couple during the season 11 finale, and it was because the firefighter wasn’t around. Hopefully they will be able to patch things up and fortify their marriage once Severide returns to the Windy City.
