All good things must come to an end. Blue Bloods has been one of CBS’ flagship shows for over a decade, but the network has decided that the upcoming season will be its last. Deadline broke the news on Monday, courtesy of Amy Reisenbach and David Stapf, President of CBS Entertainment and CBS Studios, respectively.

Blue Bloods will forever be a beloved part of CBS’s legacy”, the two explained in a joint statement. “It ruled Friday nights with unprecedented dominance since its premiere and established itself as a pillar of our winning lineup with an exceptionally devoted fan base.” It’s a sad outcome, but given reports of desired budget cuts and the general track record of long-running shows being more expensive to fund, it’s not much of a surprise.

How many episodes are in Blue Bloods season 14?

The good news is that Blue Bloods will be getting a longer season than was initially believed. Most procedural dramas will be getting 10-13 episodes in 2024, but because the show will be wrapping up its entire run, it will be given an impressive 18 episodes. The first ten will run during midseason, which starts February 16, and the final eight will run in the fall.

The finale of season 14, which will double as the finale of the entire series, will be split into two parts so that the proper screen time can be dedicated to each character. The plan to wrap up the series in 2024 has been in the works for some time. As we previously mentioned, there were talks of budget cuts and a desire to cut down the considerably high budget, and Deadline revealed that the decision to officially end the show was made after the end of SAG-AFTRA strike.

Blue Bloods showrunner Kevin Wade was aware of this plan, and he was very gracious to CBS and the all of the people who put 13 years of their lives into the story of Reagan family,.

"“CBS Studios and the CBS Television Network encouraged us to tell our stories in multi-layered narratives that have gone on to resonate with millions of people, and we thank them for their unwavering partnership and collaboration”, Wade explained in a written statement. “We look forward to giving fans an exciting and emotionally satisfying final season, and we are forever grateful for their enthusiasm and their loyalty over all these years.”"

It’s a sad day for the Blue Bloods fanbase, but at least the show will be given the proper care and time to deliver a satisfying conclusion. It’s what the Reagan family deserves.
