Chicago Med star on 2024 cast changes: ‘Nice to have new faces’
One Chicago is making several changes ahead of the 2024 season, but Chicago Med is leading the charge when it comes to cleaning house. The medical drama will be without two main characters, Dr. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) and Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), for the first time in history, so it’ll be a markedly different viewing experience.
That said, change can be a good thing. There are lots of exciting possibilities for Med season 9, including the addition of brand new cast members. The show has already confirmed that it will be bringing in a thirty-something doctor who has a longstanding friendship with Dr. Charles (Oliver Platt), and current star Jessy Schram is here for it!
Schram, who plays Dr. Hannah Asher, and who has played an increasingly larger role in the show since she was introduced as a recurring character in season 5, talked about the changes during a recent interview with TV Guide.
“I was told that we’re going to be having some new faces coming through the hospital, whether it be for short stints or bigger stints,” she stated. “The writers strike only ended shortly before the actors strike, so I’m completely in the dark as to where the season is going to be right now.”
The actress also noted that bringing in new characters will spice up stories that have yet to be resolved. “I think it will be nice to have some new faces,” she added. “We’ll definitely have some voids from Brian Tee and Nick Gehlfuss being gone, and they definitely will be sorely missed. But I think it will be very fun to see where the dynamics are… what happened with Archer’s issue with his kidneys, what’s happened with different relationships.”
The reference to Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber) makes sense, given that a lot of Asher’s screen time was shared with Archer in season 8. The two developed a surprisingly close relationship, not quite romantic, as some fans initially theorized, but definitely a strong bond that goes against Dr. Archer’s emotionally callous reputation.
Schram voiced enthusiasm at being able to return to the Chicago Med sets, but she did admit to being nervous, since it’s been so long since she’s played Dr. Asher. “Whenever you have a break, you have a little bit of fear, like, ‘Do I even know how to act? We were definitely in a swing with the medical jargon and what we were doing,” she noted. “I’m sure we’ll be a little rusty, but everybody is very lucky that we all get to go back. We might have some bumps and bruises in the beginning, but I know we’ll find our footing really quickly.”
Bumps and bruises withstanding, Chicago Med season 9 will premiere on Wednesday, January 17. It will be kicking off One Chicago Wednesday, meaning it will be the very first new episode of the franchise in half a year.
