The Rookie might incorporate characters from cancelled Rookie: Feds
We were hoping this wouldn’t happen. The Rookie: Feds was an exciting expansion of The Rookie franchise, and seemed poised to be another long-lasting hit for ABC. Sadly, the network decided to pull the plug on the spin-off after just one season, meaning fans won’t get to see what happens to Simone Clark (Niecy Nash) and company.
Well, technically. It’s true that we won’t be getting any more of Rookie: Feds in an official capacity, but there’s a very good chance that characters from the spin-off could appear on The Rookie and either bolster the cast of the flagship show or resolve character arcs and storylines that the first season of Feds was unable to complete.
TV Insider’s Matt Roush is optimistic about the possibility of seeing Simone Clark in future The Rookie episodes. “It would make sense, given that the characters from the Feds spinoff have been established within the Rookie universe, that we’d see some of these characters again when the story calls for it,” he asserted. At least, in the long term. Roush made a valid point regarding the shortened 2024 season, which will effectively cut the usual amount of Rookie episodes in half.
“This would also be a good gesture for the fans left hanging, but keep in mind that with truncated seasons this year,” he noted. “The producers will be scrambling to tell stories for their long-dormant main casts and may not have as many opportunities as within a regular full season to accommodate as many special guest appearances.”
The silver lining of the situation is that there will be future seasons of The Rookie, in which Feds characters could return and help the titular character, John Nolan (Nathan Fillion), solve cases. It’s been established that there’s chemistry between Nolan and Clark, and Fillion (who also produces the franchise) is game for more crossover events.
“I really enjoy Niecy,” the actor told Entertainment Weekly. “I get along really well with Niecy,” he said, adding “And I like working with Niecy because Niecy does all the hard work.”
In the same chat, Fillion mentions that he was scared that a spin-off would lead to Rookie cast members being taken from the main show, which is a concern that’s proven ironic given that the opposite now appears to be more likely. It’s disappointing to see the chances of a larger Rookie franchises dwindle, but at least fans can take solace in the fact that the main story is still going strong on ABC.
