One Chicago is a romance-heavy franchise. Whether you prefer the emotional (and literal) pyrotechnics of Chicago Fire, the workplace tension of Chicago Med, or the deadly stakes of Chicago PD, there is always a couple coming together or doing their best not to break up.

We’re not complaining, mind you. Romance makes for good television a lot of the time, and the chemistry between the different characters is fantastic most of the time. So fantastic, in fact, that fans have questioned whether any of the fictional romances blossomed into the real thing off the small screen. We’re here to set the record straight…

Jesse Lee Soffer & Sophia Bush dated at the same time as their characters

There have been plenty of behind-the-scenes romances on One Chicago. Ironically, most of them have been between actors who are no longer part of the franchise. Jesse Lee Soffer, for example, dated two different One Chicago actresses during his time on PD, and the first one, Sophia Bush, actually coincided with a romance between their characters!

Soffer and Bush dated between 2014 and 2016, according to Us Weekly, which is the same time period in which their characters, Jay Halstead and Erin Lindsay, were romantically involved. Their characters were forced to keep their relationship under wraps during most of the second season, due to the fact that Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) instilled a no-dating policy in the IU.

Halstead and Lindsay’s dynamic was complicated, to say the least. They were through frequent break ups and attempts to be friends, but they always came back around to dating, and Halstead even considered proposing to Lindsay before she left the IU (and the show) to move to New York.

While much less complicated, Soffer Bush’s relationship also came to an end. There were no hard feelings on either side, according to Show Biz Cheatsheet, and the two of them managed to stay friends in the years since.

Soffer is involved in the only other instance of One Chicago cast members dating, and it occurred after his split from Bush. He began dating Chicago Med star Torrey DeVitto in 2018, and the couple were together for eight before ultimately calling it quits. It’s a fun bit of franchise trivia, but Soffer and DeVitto rarely shared screen time due to the fact that their characters were on different titles.

It’s probably for the best, since DeVitto’s character, Natalie Manning, ended up settling down with Jay Halstead’s brother, Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss), during the season 8 finale of Chicago Med. It all worked out for the best!
