9-1-1 is at an interesting point in its history. Fans were genuinely surprised to see the flagship show and its spinoff, 9-1-1: Lone Star, land on different networks. Then, they were surprised to learn that Lone Star was getting the boot.
Despite being transferred to another network, the Texas-based spinoff has been canceled. Ryan Murphy, one of the franchise's creators, lamented the show's cancelation during a recent interview with Variety. He did, however, note that there are some exciting plans for the future.
Ryan Murphy promised a spinoff in a new city
Murphy assured fans that he loved 9-1-1: Lone Star, but was unable to do what was needed to keep the show going strong. "Sadly, we all love Lone Star, but the financials just didn’t work," he explained. "It’s a Disney company that was on a Fox network, and it just was never going to work. And we had a long run of it."
The good news, though, is that Murphy and co-creator Tim Minear have plans to launch a third 9-1-1 show in the coming years. He didn't divulge too much about the proposed spinoff, but assured fans that it will be set in a brand new city.
"Now we’re going to launch a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s fun," Ryan Murphy told the outlet. He made it clear that ABC is eager for more 9-1-1 content, given how well it does, and will be eagerly pushing out the spinoff once it makes it to the small screen.
Murphy lamented Lone Star's cancelation
"They obviously have an appetite for that," Murphy noted. "So we’re going to give them another one that I really love." He isn't the only one who is disappointed by the decision to yank 9-1-1: Lone Star off the air.
Rob Lowe, the spinoff's star, told Variety that he knew season 5 would mark its last, so he was determined to show the network and the fans what Lone Star was capable of. "We all went into it pretty much knowing that it was going to be the last season, so that affected everything we did," the actor stated. "We wanted to really show everybody what is still possible in network television."
9-1-1: Lone Star will air its series finale February 3, 2025 on Fox. Don't miss out on the end of an era!
