ABC (finally!) renews these beloved procedural dramas before their season finales

This is a very encouraging sign for the procedural TV world!

ABC has been taking an interesting approach to the renewal game. In contract to CBS, a network that has slashed through several of its beloved titles in the interest of promoting spinoffs, ABC has largely been quiet. Until Thursday. The network made the hopes and dreams of fans come true by renewing five beloved titles!

These titles include Grey's Anatomy, The Rookie, Shifting Gears, Will Trent and 9-1-1. One of these are shows rarely discussed on One Chicago Center, but Grey's Anatomy, The Rookie and 9-1-1 are huge titles in the procedural world, and we are frankly relieved to see them get picked up.

The spinoffs of these franchises have struggled to maintain their footing in recent years. The Rookie: Feds was canceled after a single season, and Station 19, the Grey's Anatomy spinoff that's focused on firefighting, also got the boot. Then there's 9-1-1: Lone Star, which recently concluded its run on FOX. Mothership shows typically fare better when it comes to renewals than spinoffs, but in light of the aforementioned CBS cancelations, it's nice to have confirmation.

These new renewals join previously renewed ABC titles like Abbott Elementary and 9-1-1: Nashville, the latter of which will premiere during the 2025-26 season and star NCIS: Los Angeles veteran Chris O'Donnell. There is a downside to the network's current roster, however. There is one popular show that has yet to be canceled or brought back for another season: Doctor Odyssey.

Doctor Odyssey is still on the bubble

The medical drama, which recently crossed over with 9-1-1 in a thrilling episode, is still awaiting its fate as ABC dishes out renewal notices. TV Line, the outlet that confirmed the aforementioned shows will be returning, did offer a word of encouragement for Doctor Odyssey fans. They revealed that the network has not given up on the show, and is currently engaged in conversations to bring it back for a second season. Fingers crossed.

ABC may not have any impact on the NBC franchises we regularly cover on the site, but the fact that the network is issuing out renewals is a great sign for its peer network. It's been pretty silent when it comes to the fates of NBC's Law and Order and One Chicago franchises, but the closer we get to the finales for each of their spinoffs, the closer we get to finding out whether they are coming back for additional seasons. It's an exciting, albeit stressful time!
