Chicago Med is one of those shows with a large ensemble. However, this has never seemed to be a problem when it came to giving room for every character’s storyline to develop. One way or another, the show crafted space for everyone to shine and for fans to fall in love with (or come to hate) each character.
But here is the thing: that doesn’t mean that the screen time allocated to each Chicago Med character is fair or what the fans want. The truth is that when it comes to certain characters, we wish their storylines would be explored further. And one of those characters is Naomi Howard (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) because, let’s be real, there is so much to explore there.
When the show introduced the storyline in which Naomi dealt with sexual harassment in the workplace, fans believed that would be the perfect opportunity for her character to have more time on our screens. However, this plot was handled quickly, things were pushed under the rug, and Naomi went back to her previously scheduled screen time. A missed opportunity for sure.
Then came the Miranda Lewis (Orlagh Cassidy) health scare on Chicago Med season 11, episode 12, “Spill Your Guts.” Once again, it seemed like Naomi would gain traction. She guided Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) through a difficult procedure, making us believe it was her time to shine. But, lo and behold, it was not. She went back to the shadows, only popping in and out when it helped other characters around her.
Her screen time did increase when her relationship with Frost (Darren Barnet) became official. She became her number one supporter, providing the safe space he needed as he navigated his father’s declining health. Viewers were able to see a side of Naomi that had been kept hidden, making them fall in love with her even more.
Regardless of the amount of time Naomi has spent on screen since joining the show, she has become a well-liked character by the fans. She is kind, calm, and caring, bringing a different perspective to a show that’s usually ruled by chaos. While it may seem like her type of character could be boring, what she brings to the table is completely the opposite.
There is a mystery to Naomi’s persona that seems worth exploring. Who really is she? What is her background story? How did she end up here? Those are all things that should be addressed at one point or another, and it would be interesting to see that happening during Chicago Med season 12.
