It's all been building up to this. Blue Bloods has done an excellent job of balancing case of the week stories with an overarching narrative, but the series finale will feature a case that wraps up the arcs of all the Reagan family members.

It's not easy to stick the landing on a series finale, let alone one for a show that's been on the air for a decade and a half. That's the challenge that writer Jack Ciapciak was given heading into the final leg of the show. Ciapiak managed to get the job done, and he discussed the Thursday night finale during a recent interview with Us Weekly.

Ciapiak told the outlet that the stakes have never been higher for Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck) and the rest of the NYPD. "It’s business as usual in the fact that he is still the commissioner of New York City," he explained. "But the stakes are definitely raised."

The writer was careful not to reveal too much of what happens, but he did let a major detail slip regarding Frank Reagan's storyline. "[Frank is] given the keys to the city by the mayor," he stated. This'll radically changed the power dynamic between the Commissioner and the Mayor, played by Dylan Walsh.

It does, however, line up with the Blue Bloods preview that CBS released a few days before the finale. A tense conversation between Reagan and the Mayor sees the former voice his reluctance to take charge of an emergency situation.

Frank Reagan will be given the key to the city

Commissioner Reagan expresses doubt over his ability to get the job done, and the Mayor assures him that he's the right man for the job. "You can," he tells Reagan in the preview. "You’ve done it to me a million times. Get us out of this."

The synopsis for the series finale, titled "End of Tour," details a citywide conflict between gangs. "The Reagan family races to stop deadly mayhem in the city," the CBS breakdown reads. "When the gangs of New York unite to demand amnesty for the release of their imprisoned members and those awaiting trial."

Jack Ciapiak assures fans that Commissioner Reagan just what he always does, which is find a way to prevail. He "definitely rises to the occasion," the writer said to Us Weekly. "Business is high stakes and the rest you’ll see." We can't wait to see!
