Chicago Fire almost paired Severide with a surprising Chicago PD character

Chicago Fire stars reveal the show once considered pairing Severide with a Chicago PD character before abandoning the storyline early on.

It’s impossible to think of Severide with anyone other than Kidd these days, as the duo has been going strong for over 10 seasons and counting now on Chicago Fire. However, it turns out that the show nearly explored a very unexpected romantic encounter between Severide and one of Chicago PD’s original actors.

In late June, Chicago Fire stars Taylor Kinney and Miranda Rae Mayo appeared at Empire Conventions' Saving Lives Con 2 in France, where the pair took part in a series of fan panels. During one session with the two Chicago Fire favorites, Kinney and Mayo fielded questions from the fans in attendance, which led to an unexpected reveal about an abandoned storyline from the early years in the show’s run.

During the Q&A, one fan asked the pair whether there was a storyline that they hated. The pair were a bit caught off guard by the initial question, which came after they praised the writers and spoke about the trust they place in them, and took a diplomatic approach to the question. Instead of naming a storyline they hated, Mayo jumped in to reflect on a storyline she was sad to see the writers abandon after planting some seeds early in the season.

“I was really sad there towards the beginning, I think they kind of planted a seed where Severide and Platt were maybe going to have a rendezvous, and I’m sad we never explored that,” Mayo shared.

Kinney was quick to add additional background to Mayo’s answer, reflecting on how the show had worked in a fun scene between Severide and Platt that ultimately never went further than a one-off line.

“I had a scene when PD was starting out, and it was a benign question. I go to the police station, and I’m trying to get somebody out, and I have this conversation with her, and I’m like, “Can I get them to go out?" and she thinks I’m asking her out or something. And she’s like ‘I’d break you like a twig.’ And she played it so straight, and it just made it so tough to do the scene because you’re laughing. But yeah, that’s a storyline that I think could have been a lot of fun,” Kinney reflected.

We’re not going to lie, a Severide and Platt hookup is not something we ever anticipated even being in the cards. It certainly would have been interesting to see what that pairing would have looked like even if just for a short arc, but we have to admit the writers made the right decision in abandoning that particular thread.

The scene between Severide and Platt worked as a comedic moment in the episode, and we certainly would have loved to see more banter between the pair—and still would love to see more interactions between the two longtime members of the One Chicago universe. But we definitely think the writers made the right call in not taking that conversation any further by having Severide and Platt become romantically involved, even if just for one night.

It’s certainly interesting to think of how that storyline could have created a butterfly effect for the show had the writers not abandoned it. Would Platt and Mouch have gotten together had she previously been involved with Severide? Could it have changed the trajectory of Severide and Kidd’s relationship timeline, or even led to the pair never getting together and later marrying? There is truly no telling what that storyline could have led to, but we’re pretty certain that everything worked out for the best with the direction the writers choose to go in.
