Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) had a pretty lackluster start to Chicago Fire season 13. She played a backseat to her peers, and the constantly shifting schedule of her husband, Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney). It felt like she was losing ground despite being one of the most important people in the firehouse.
Fortunately, the second half of the season has fixed this problem. Kidd was front and center during the One Chicago crossover, and she was arguably the main focus of the follow up, "Relief Cut." She will continue to play a crucial role to the show when it returns on February 19.
The show will refocus on the Girls on Fire program

The synopsis for the episode "Born of Fire" has been released, and it confirms that Kidd will be the driving force behind the main plot. She will partner with Severide to create some rope drills in for the incoming firefighters. These drills will then be applied to a program we haven't gotten to see in many years: Girls on Fire.
As a brief refresher, the Girls on Fire program was founded by Kidd in season 8. The firefighter wanted to encourage young women to pursue a career in her field, and traveled the U.S. as a means of getting through to them.
It was one of the best arcs Kidd has had during the entire show, and it also spurred the career of one Kylie Estevez (Katelynn Shennett), who is still a vital (albeit sporadic) presence in the firehouse. She just helped Herrmann (David Eigenberg) solve a case involving fire extinguishers.
Severide will help Kidd refine the program

It's worth noting, however, that Kidd's Girls on Fire travels also coincided with one of the roughest patches in her relationship with Severide. The firefighter did a poor job of staying in touch with her fiance, to the point where they had to have some serious conversations upon her return.
The couple appears to be in a good place, especially after deciding to adopt a child and start a family together. The reintegration of the Girls on Fire program has us thinking the Fire writers will go in one of two directions. Either Kidd's interest in the program will cause relationship issues once again, or it'll show just how far she has come, and they will continue to grow together.
We'd sincerely like to see the latter. Kidd and Severide have been through a lot. Kidd almost died in the One Chicago crossover, for crying out loud. We want to see them thrive and embark on their first foray into parenthood with as little drama as possible. Of course, given the nature of the show, there's going to be something that happens.
