Chicago Fire confirmed a major Severide update (and no one seems to be talking about it)

Severide had a huge moment in Chicago Fire season 14 episode 20 with the IA investigation, but there was a bigger update for him that seems to have slipped under the radar.

From the very beginning to now almost at the end, Chicago Fire season 14 has been a rollercoaster for Severide. Between balancing new family dynamics with Kidd and Isaiah and coming under fire with Chief Hopkins during the Internal Affairs investigation, it's been a nonstop season full of ups and downs. But did the penultimate episode of season 14 drop an update that most people missed?

It's understandable that the latest Severide update might not be the main topic of discussion among fans, especially since Chicago Fire season 14 episode 20 was a jam-packed episode for him already. After being reported by Hopkins to Internal Affairs, Severide spent the majority of the episode working to save his future at the CFD and get to the bottom of Hopkins' feud with his dad.

Throughout the episode, Hopkins and Williams worry that Severide is attempting to build a retaliation case against them by looking into the cold case from the past, but by the end of the episode, his true intentions are revealed. He discovers the truth about what happened, clearing his dad's name in the process, and earns a new nickname from Chief Hopkins: captain.

Hopkins confirms Severide's captain title in Chicago Fire season 14 episode 20

That's right! The major Severide update in Chicago Fire season 14 episode 20 is the confirmation that he's now an official captain. It's been a long process to get to this point, and it had been made much more complicated by Hopkins embroiling him in the Internal Affairs investigation. If there's anyone who deserves a title like captain, it's most definitely Severide.

He had already passed the captain's exam and earned the top score, but ending up on the wrong side of Hopkins' favor prevented Severide from taking the next step in his career at the CFD. It's something he's wanted, and after solving this cold case with the help of Cruz, learning that Williams stole the watch not Benny, he's more than ready to take on any even bigger leadership position.

It's a throwaway line from Hopkins, sure, but the fact that he referred to Severide as captain holds a lot of weight—especially after what he put him through with the IA investigation and believing the worst in him. But just because Severide has been handed the title of captain from Hopkins right now, that doesn't mean there aren't still some decisions to be made about his future.

Going into the Chicago Fire season 14 finale, there's still the matter of the possibility for Severide to take over the Office of Fire Investigation. The concept of Severide jumping over to a position at the OFI seemed to be a means to get out of the IA investigation with the CFD, but at the end of episode 20, Van Meter pushes him to consider Hargraves' idea to accept the position.

Obviously, that would entail all kinds of changes for Severide's personal and professional lives. But we all know that everyone's kind of right: His leadership would for sure help the OFI excel. Severide has long been a leader in investigating fires and learning what caused them, working closely with OFI arson investigator Van Meter. However, would he really take the plunge?

The Chicago Fire season 14 finale has some big questions to answer for Severide. He will seemingly be mulling over being captain at Firehouse 51 or becoming a leader at OFI. No matter what he chooses or what comes next for him in season 15, you have to admit that it's a great time to be a Severide fan. His name is cleared and his future looks bright in both directions.
