Chicago Fire continues to break Violet's heart with this frustrating story trend

The character cannot seem to catch a break in this regard.

Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith) is an inherently likable character. She's loyal, caring, and she does her absolute best in the field as a medic. She is someone we have been rooting for since she debuted on Chicago Fire in season 8. And yet, Violet can't seem to catch a break when it comes to her love life.

Sam Carver (Jake Lockett), the character who's had an on/off romance with Violet over the past season, will be leaving Chicago Fire. We don't know when, but it is safe to assume the character will be exiting before the season 13 finale. This is a devastating blow to fans who have been invested in the Violet and Carver romance, and held out hope that they would figure things out.

Carver's impending departure means this will never happen. It's frustrating in a vacuum, but it gets even more frustrating when placed in the context of Violet's other romantic storylines on the show. The medic had an on/off romance with Evan Hawkins (Jimmy Nicholas), and similar to the current Carver situation, their dynamic drew praise from Chicago Fire fans. Then, the show killed Hawkins.

Violet has lost three love interests in two seasons

Violet had to watch as her boyfriend died as a result of injuries sustained in a building fire. She is still dealing with the trauma of this death, as evidenced by the fact that she referenced it in the aftermath of Monica Pascal (KaDee Strickland) dying. Violet also had a romantic history with Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende), the man Hawkins saved in the aforementioned building fire.

Things never seemed to line up right for Violet and Gallo. And they never did, because Gallo was also written out of the show the season after Hawkins died. He quit his position at Firehouse 51 to move to Michigan. This makes Carver the third Violet love interest to be written out of Chicago Fire in the last two seasons. That's a terrible ratio, and one that's bordering on comical.

Chicago Fire is relying too heavily on this arc

It's worth noting that Violet is technically in a relationship at the moment, with lawyer Flynn (Steven Strait), but relationships with peripheral Chicago Fire characters rarely last. Plus, Violet has made it clear that she still has strong feelings for Carver, and carries a lot of guilt about accusing him of drinking on the job right before he took his leave of absence.

It'll be emotional for everyone when Carver leaves Chicago Fire, but we would really appreciate it if Violet caught just one break when it came to her love life. I mean, c'mon.
