For a lot of reasons, Chicago Fire season 14 episode 16 will be one of the most unforgettable episodes of the entire series. However, depending on who you are, the reason it's unforgettable might vary. During the episode, about half of the current season's series regulars were not present, which some fans thought actually worked but others weren't too pleased with.
Even though the episode was without the majority of its character, Chicago Fire still managed to deliver some intense surprises. Severide continued to experience some major growing pains with Chief Hopkins, who seems to have it out for our long-time Firehouse 51 favorite. But the episode also gave some new insight into Hopkins' past with one of the season's newest characters.
Back in season 14 episode 14, Roswell, New Mexico star Jeanine Mason made her Chicago Fire debut as Lucy, Chief Pascal's new assistant who sticks around Firehouse 51 to help out. Mason's set to appear in multiple episodes moving forward, and her her latest appearance brought some unexpectedly dark lore for Lucy to further fill in her backstory. We didn't see this coming!
Lucy's secret is revealed in Chicago Fire season 14 episode 16
Toward the end of Chicago Fire season 14 episode 16, we learn that Lucy and Chief Hopkins have a history together, but it's nothing like how that sounds. Five years ago, Lucy was involved in a car accident and sustained a serious injury to her arm. Chief Hopkins was one of the first responders who answered the call and was at the scene. Obviously, he knows the full extent of what happened.
Lucy had been drinking before getting into the accident, which was her fault. She went to the hospital in an ambulance with a police escort per Hopkins' call, but Lucy wasn't ultimately sent to jail. In the aftermath, her driver's license was suspended. She feels guilt about the fact that she didn't serve any time for the accident, but she clearly tried her best to get her life back on track.
Because the Chicago Fire Department is in such a tense moment right now with jobs changing and cuts being made, Severide worries about his job. But it seems like Lucy won't have anything to worry about with Hopkins. He isn't going to fire her and keeps her job safe at the firehouse, but there appear to be strings. She works for him. This could be bad news for her since he knows her secret.
Leading up to the season 14 finale, Chicago Fire seems to be placing its characters in uncomfortable territory with new leadership. It's all building up to what's sure to be a shocking season finale that could bring more unexpected changes. More than anything, it will be interesting to see how Lucy's dark secret plays into the possible Firehouse 51 shakes and her future on the show.
Chicago Fire airs Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC, also streaming on Peacock.
