Chicago Fire, Med, and PD are about to take an extended break

Since returning for their new seasons, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago PD have been airing without much interruption at all. In fact, there has only been one break in the shows’ current seasons since they kicked off on Wednesday, Sept. 25. 

It’s been amazing getting to enjoy new episodes without barely any interruptions and it’s helped with the flow of the first part of the season. Sadly, the One Chicago shows are about to go on what will be their longest break of the season – one which will keep the shows off the air until the new year. 

On Wednesday, Nov. 20, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago PD will air their last new episode of 2024 as the One Chicago shows prepare for their fall breaks with their fall finales. That’s right, the fall finales for the One Chicago shows will be airing on Nov. 20 which is honestly a bit surprising as we’re not used to the shows signing off the air so early. 

Typically, the One Chicago shows air new episodes until sometime in early December before taking a break for the holidays and returning in January. Instead, it seems NBC has opted to send the shows on break a bit early instead of having a pair of smaller breaks, which we honestly respect and appreciate. 

Sure we’d love to get new this year, but we’d much rather the shows go on a longer break for the winter than take three weeks off, air one new episode, and then go on a break for several additional weeks as we’ve seen in the past. 

This year, with the shows signing off before Thankgiving, we’ll have a longer break between new episodes but the good news is that this could actually help avoid too many crazy breaks in the upcoming months. Though, to be clear, we still will have a few breaks in the season ahead which is standard given the shows’ remaining episodes will have to be spaced out across a five-month span. 

What we don’t yet know is when the shows will return but that information should be confirmed when the promos drop for the next episodes of Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago PD. Our expectation is that they’ll be back the second week of January with new episodes airing on Wednesday, Jan. 8 – though who knows, maybe NBC will decide to air new episodes on New Year’s Day which would certainly be an exciting way to kick off 2025!
