Over the years, Chicago Fire fans have grown accustomed to the show throwing Severide and Kidd plenty of ups and downs. But the past two season finales have baited fans with life-changing twists for the couple before returning for the next season with a major switch up. Once again, Stellaride fans have been on an emotional rollercoaster with little payoff (at least so far).

If you'll remember, in the Chicago Fire season 13 finale, Kidd reveals to Severide that she's pregnant with their first child. The moment brought years of buildup for the couple to the exciting prospect of a new future together. However, very quickly into the season 14 premiere, Severide and Kidd learn that she had an early-stage miscarriage and lost the baby.

The Chicago Fire season 15 premiere delivered a similarly abrupt update on two potentially life-changing decisions for Stellaride. In the season 14 finale, Severide was considering taking on a new position at OFI and the couple was presented with the possibility of fostering Isaiah full-time. But neither of those things actually happened. Stellaride fans are right back where we started.

Not that anyone realistically wanted Severide to leave Firehouse 51, but the couple somehow not being able to start a family, whether through pregnancy or with the foster son who wanted to live with them, is getting frustrating. The personal storyline outside of work has been moving in fits and starts, but more fits than starts. Literally, too. The couple hit a rough patch while fostering Isaiah last season.

Each time we seem to be making progress with Stellaride, the series pulls back and reverses whichever step forward had been taken. The more this happens, the more fans become annoyed with nothing really happening for the couple. Why can't they have a family, in some form, if that's what they want? It's not as if having children, like other characters on the squad, will interfere with their work.

It's important for stories like Kidd's pregnancy loss to be told, but even that storyline was mostly skated past rather than being addressed head-on. Likewise, fostering and possibly adopting Isaiah could have been a relatable story to watch unfold, but we don't even get the chance to watch Stellaride make that decision onscreen. Isaiah was written off, at least for now, through dialogue.

Chicago Fire could have had the unique opportunity to break new ground with Kidd's pregnancy. There are lots of firefighter shows on the small screen, but there hasn't been a storyline featuring a pregnancy for one of the main team members. Male firefighter characters have had pregnant wives, sure. But the chance to see Kidd pregnant and saving lives would have been epic and inspiring.

Apparently, we'll have to keep waiting to see what's in the cards for the couple. We keep getting our hopes up for Severide and Kidd finally getting something they want, or taking a step forward as a couple, only to learn that a bait-and-switch was waiting on the other side. We're way past the era of TV where the main couple becoming parents means the show is coming to an end.

Chicago Fire has plenty of gas left in its tank to last for many, many more seasons. Stringing Stellaride fans along season by season isn't going to drum up much good faith. It's far better to take risks and see them through than to tiptoe toward taking a risk and backtracking without showing all your cards. Hopefully, there are some good surprises for Stellaride yet to come in season 15.
