Heading into Chicago Fire season 14, episode 14, we knew it was going to be an intense episode. Those assumptions quickly proved to be true as the episode brought about a series of unexpected developments, both good and bad.
The episode opened with Pascal heading to see the board to find out how his arrest in the crossover would impact his future in the CFD. Before we get answers on what the board has decided, we get some great news in the form of Mouch’s return to Firehouse 51! As we cut to 51, we see Mouch arriving with his belongings in hand as Herrmann comes out to welcome him back. It turns out Pascal had managed to cash in one final favor to bring Mouch back home to Firehouse 51.
Mouch’s return is a welcome surprise to the entire 51 team, who are thrilled to see him back after his stint at Firehouse 40. Speaking of surprises, the episode also introduces a new character in the form of Lucy, a new hire brought in by the CFD to be Pascal’s new assistant.
A call comes through, and Truck and Squad head out to the scene. As Kidd is on the rig, a box truck speeds through the scene and clips the rig, knocking Kidd from it. Luckily, her quick reflexes allowed her to grab hold of a wire below and Kidd makes it down safely. Seeing his wife nearly killed on the scene by the actions of the driver, Severide calls in CPD and makes it clear he won’t stop until they find the man responsible.
After returning from the call, Mouch admits to Herrmann that he’s struggling to finish the funeral attack report and find the right words to describe the event. He knows the report will become public record, and he needs to get the wording correct and knows he can stand by what he writes.
Following the accident, Severide notifies Kidd that Truck is being pulled out of service until it can be inspected, which he suggests isn’t the worst thing after all Kidd has been through. She admits Macy’s death had shaken her up at first; she’s okay now as she turns the question back on him to ask if he’s okay as well, to which he replies he will be when they catch the driver.

Pascal has been fired from the CFD
Severide goes to see Pascal upon his return. He notes that Lucy’s arrival was a clerical error, as the board has come down on him harder than expected. The CFD makes an example of him, with Pascal being terminated for conduct unbecoming and relieved of duty effective immediately. As he informs Severide, this will be his last shift at 51.
Pascal then breaks the news to the rest of the 51 team as he reveals that Chief Hopkins will be overseeing the house in addition to five other firehouses. He makes it clear that he needs everyone at the top of their game as he prepares to leave.
Severide heads out to speak with CPD about a lead as Pascal informs Lucy without a chief, there will be no need for an assistant. She helps him get through his tasks and has no interest in leaving. As Severide meets with CPD, he’s informed that there were no cameras in the area, making it difficult to track down the box truck that crashed into Truck 81.
At the firehouse, Herrmann is shocked at how they’re throwing Pascal out. Mouch suggests he can’t change the ending, but he’s not going to memorialize it. He’s going to not finish the funeral attack report as a small protest. Mouch is called in for his briefing as he throws the file in the trash. Herrmann asks if he’s sure he wants to do it, and Mouch suggests no one is keeping track of paperwork, as evident in them sending a secretary over the same day they fired Pascal.
We learn that Truck is clear to return to duty, but rather than showing pleasure in the news, Pascal questions the position of the vehicle that led to the accident. He requests that Kidd prepare a full report to prove this before their debrief.
Determined to find the driver, Severide returns to the scene of the accident to canvas the area to look for something that the truck might have left behind to give them a make or model. As they break off, Cruz asks Severide what he knows about the chief set to replace Pascal, and Severide notes the new chief has a reputation as a hardass. Cruz points out how Severide will be the head of the house now with no chief present, given Pascal’s replacement will be overseeing five other houses, but the conversation is cut short as Capp and Tony find some track marks that could help identify the truck.
Back at 51, Mouch meets with Pascal for his final debrief. All is in order, and Pascal is more than happy with the plans. Mouch has worked out for the three-man rig. Before Mouch leaves, Pascal reveals that Mouch’s former chief at Firehouse 40 called about the funeral attack report, and it needs to be finished ASAP. As he prepares to leave, Mouch asks about Pascal's plans, and Pascal says the CFD has determined him to be unfit to be chief, he’s going to take it as a sign.
Following the conversation, Mouch drops in on Herrmann, who is performing inventory per Pascal’s order. Mouch can’t get over how Pascal is throwing in the towel. He points out that right now Pascal can’t see beyond things, and Herrmann questions if this is a guilt thing. Mouch says when the CFD tried to push him out, Pascal fought for him, and he can’t turn his back on him now when he knows Pascal has more to give.

Pascal leaves a final surprise for Severide on his way out
As Severide and Squad continue to look into the box truck, Kidd mentioned there was some discoloration from the accident, and they get photos of it. It looks green, suggesting the box truck had been painted and the CPD has been looking for the wrong color all this time. As Severide goes to call CPD, Cruz offers to help as he points out he has a briefing with Pascal. Severide notes he’s going to be the one to find this guy, as he could have lost Stella.
Later, Kidd and the team respond to a crash, and it turns out to be the same box truck that crashed into the rig. Kidd and Herrmann find a man with a head wound who seems to be the driver, trying to flee the scene. Mouch and the others arrive as the man denies doing anything and help escort him to the medics for treatment.
After getting an update, Severide heads out with Cruz to go make an ID. Squad arrives at the hospital as Severide exits. Cruz realizes something is off as he reminds Severide that the house needs him now more than ever; he can’t go wrecking his career by confronting the man. Just then the CPD officer arrives to show him a photo of the man to confirm the ID, and Severide confirms it is him.
Back at 51, Kidd sits down with Pascal for her debriefing, walking him through the scene and proving there was nothing she could have done to avoid the crash. Kidd notes Pascal has been hardest on her since day one over all the other lieutenants, and he admits it’s true. He says he’s been harder on her than the rest, as he sees himself in her. Kidd admits she thought she’d done something wrong, and he notes it was a failure of communication on his part as he tells her she is an exceptional leader and he’s proud to have been her chief. He knows she suffered a deep loss and will have to rally, but he reminds her not to hide from her success. She needs to make others see what he sees in her: endless potential.
As Pascal gathers the last of his things, he drops in to see Severide. Severide admits to almost crossing a line last night and notes thankfully Cruz helped him, to which Pascal points out that’s what you need a crew for, to hold you accountable. He reminds Severide that being ready isn’t a feeling; it’s a decision. Before he heads out, Pascal asks Severide to check with Lucy, as he left something for Severide.
Pascal enters his car and prepares to head out as Mouch comes out to turn in the report on the funeral attack. He asks him to read the report before he fully walks away. From his home, Pascal reads the report in which Mouch calls out Pascal’s heroism as a reflection of a storied career, one that shaped leaders and valued brotherhood and accountability. His report spotlights how the CFD is privileged to have had him serve within its ranks, as leadership like his is needed. The report inspires Pascal to pick up his phone and respond to the text from his former friend offering him the position in Phoenix.
As the episode closes, Severide goes to see Lucy, who makes it clear she’s going to stick around. He then asks about Pascal leaving something for him in the office, to which Lucy notes, "Pascal didn’t just leave him something in the office; he left him the office." Inside on Pascal’s desk, Severide finds a binder for the fire department promotional examination labeled "Captain Test Study Guide." It seems Pascal’s final act before leaving was to nudge Severide to take the next step to further his career by becoming a captain in the CFD.
