Chicago Fire season 14 just seemingly wrote out a key character (and we’re not sure if we’ll see him again)

For the majority of Chicago Fire season 14, we have been holding our breath waiting for the other shoe to drop in Severide and Kidd's storyline. Last season, they were prepared to become parents, but when their dreams were ultimately dashed, the couple took a different path to parenthood. However, in the latest episode, their journey took yet another unexpected turn.

Early on in season 14, Severide and Kidd became foster parents to Isaiah, whose mother was in a coma and could no longer be in her care. They welcomed him into their home with open arms, but it understandably took him a little while to warm up to his new foster parents. Little by little, they became a family unit, even though they knew it would very likely be temporary.

Well, reality quickly hit for Severide and Kidd. In Chicago Fire season 14 episode 9, Isaiah's mother woke up from her coma and elected for new care arrangements for her son. As Kidd learns while Severide investigates the fire that leaves Van Meter's life on the line, Isaiah will join his mother's friend Lydia in Cleveland, effectively removing Stellaride as his foster parents. Will we ever see him again?

Chicago Fire seemingly writes out Isaiah as he leaves Stellaride's care

It's always difficult when Chicago Fire writes out characters. Whether it's a main character being written out for an undisclosed number of episodes or a supporting character who's leaving without confirmation of their return, you can never be sure what will happen next for these characters. Most specifically, Isaiah being written out in season 14 episode 9 leaves behind more questions.

For now, his departure from Severide and Kidd's lives appears to have opened a slight rift between the couple. As Kidd dealt with the emotions attached to relinquishing care of Isaiah to his mother's friend Lydia, who would be taking him to another city in another state, she was mostly doing so without Severide by her side. He was wrapped up in learning the truth about Van Meter's fire.

They have an argument, during which Kidd expresses how she's been feeling in the lead up to saying goodbye to Isaiah. She's honest, and it's complicated, right? Because she wants Severide to find out who started the fire and be by Van Meter's side. But she also wanted to deal with the dissolution of their little family unit as one. Perhaps that's what will be explored next after Isaiah's departure.

Still, there's the chance that their journey with Isaiah isn't over yet. Honestly, the storyline happened so quickly, from them becoming his foster parents to him leaving for a new home, that it's reasonable to expect (or at least hope) that Isaiah will remain part of their lives. I mean, we're not even officially halfway into season 14. There are a lot of episodes left, and Isaiah could be back before the finale.

Whether that's by still being in contact with Severide and Kidd while he's in Cleveland or somehow needing to return to their care, it's definitely a possibility that writing out Isaiah is a temporary decision. But we also might not see him again. No matter what, Stellaride has to weather this bump in the road and what it means for their relationship and their future as parents.

Chicago Fire airs new episodes Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC, also streaming on Peacock.
