From the very beginning, the One Chicago franchise has always made an effort to create a true sense of interconnectedness between shows. Right from the start, the franchise made a conscious effort to create a shared universe with characters often popping up for small crossover moments between shows. Eventually, those crossovers would grow into an even bigger effort, with Wolf Entertainment staging proper multi-episode crossover events that would unfold over a series of episodes that were connected by a shared narrative.
Eventually, these three-show crossovers between Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago PD would become an annual staple, which fans looked forward to every year. When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in 2020, NBC had to pause its annual One Chicago crossover, and we went several seasons without a proper three-show crossover event. Thankfully, the powers that be were able to bring the annual One Chicago crossover events back in 2025 with the “In the Trenches” event, which was the franchise’s most ambitious and successful crossover yet.
Somehow, they managed to top that with 2026’s “Reckoning” crossover, which not only brought the three shows together again but also welcomed back a pair of beloved alums with Tracy Spiridakos and Jesse Lee Soffer returning for the crossover. After the success of the 2026 "Reckoning" crossover, it seemed safe to assume that a three-show One Chicago crossover for 2027 would be a sure thing. Unfortunately, that does not seem to be the case.
During a recent NBC 100 media event, Chicago Fire star Brandon Larracuente was asked about the plans for the annual crossover, and he seemed to hint that there is a chance a crossover might not happen this year.
“It’s still up in the air right now. I’m not sure if we’re having a crossover this year,” Larracuente told The TV Cave. “What I do know is that they are always well respected. I mean, so many people tune in for them, so I really hope that this year we have one. I really enjoyed my first one last year, so I hope we do have it.”
Larracuente is indeed correct that the One Chicago crossovers are a highlight for fans, and many people indeed tune in for them. The 2026 crossover led the shows to season-high ratings, with Chicago Fire opening the crossover to 6.3 million total viewers, Chicago Med’s hour then drawing 6.4 million total viewers, and Chicago PD then closing the night with 6.1 million total viewers.
Considering the success of the One Chicago crossovers, it’s interesting to know that there is a chance we might not get one this season. The good news is that we are early in the season, and it’s possible that the creative teams are still working to lock down a storyline with nothing being official just yet. The crossovers often take place later in the season, so there is plenty of time for plans to come together and for a crossover to happen in 2027.
While it is concerning that Larracuente seemed to cast some doubt over a crossover happening, we’re optimistic that NBC will manage to pull one off for the 2026-27 season and that we’ll get to see the casts of Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago PD come together in 2027 for a crossover event!
