The first Wednesday in November is shaping up to be quite an eventful night for One Chicago fans. Not only will November 4 bring about the 300th episode of Chicago Fire and the departure of Joe Minoso, but it appears Chicago Med is about to stage a mini crossover event with Chicago PD!
In Chicago Med season 12, episode 5, “Baptism by Fire,” Chicago PD fans can look forward to Amy Morton’s Sergeant Trudy Platt crossing over into the world of Chicago Med as part of a central storyline unfolding in the episode. So just what brings Platt to Gaffney?
According to the synopsis for the episode, Sgt. Platt will be paying Gaffney a visit to investigate a cold case, suggesting that perhaps a patient brought into the ED will be the catalyst for the probe. It’s unclear what might spark the reopening of this cold case or which characters Platt will interact with throughout the episode, but it’s clear that she’ll play a key role in the episode, as evident by her inclusion in the synopsis.
Despite her status as an original member of the Chicago PD ensemble, Morton has somehow only appeared in five episodes of Chicago Med throughout the years. Of those five episodes, three were connected to One Chicago crossover events, which means that in her 12 years playing Platt, Morton has only ever crossed over onto Chicago Med twice in non-crossover episodes, which is honestly wild.
As an OG of the One Chicago franchise, it’s going to be really fun to see Morton play off the Chicago Med ensemble as part of the episode storyline, and we’re definitely hoping she’ll get to share some scenes with fellow OGs S. Epatha Merkerson and Oliver Platt. It would be a dream come true to see that trio getting to work together, and it’s not often we get to see legacy characters mingle in a meaningful way outside of a crossover episode.
Regardless of who Platt crosses paths with, we’re honestly impressed with Chicago Med for doing something Chicago PD hasn’t yet this season by giving Platt a moment in the spotlight.
Sure, Morton has appeared in each episode of Chicago PD’s current season thus far, but she’s been utilized more in a supporting capacity than being featured front and center. Knowing that Chicago Med is affording her the opportunity to be part of a central storyline in the episode is really exciting, as we’re always in support of putting Morton front and center and allowing her talent to shine through!
Given how small the current Chicago PD ensemble is, it’s honestly a bit criminal that Platt isn’t featured more prominently. It’s as though the show doesn’t seem to know how to weave her into the narrative of episodes on a regular basis, which is a shame, as when they do, we often end up with some of the season’s strongest episodes.
Take, for example, Chicago PD season 13, episode 9, “Heroes,” which saw Platt facing trouble after a simple favor for a former recruit turned into a catastrophic situation. That episode was one of season 13’s strongest episodes, with a beautifully told story about suicide among law enforcement agents that highlighted the bond between Platt and Burgess, with standout performances from Morton and Marina Squerciati. Magic can happen when the show puts Morton to use, and we’re thrilled to see her bring that magic to Chicago Med on November 4 in “Baptism by Fire.”
